Choosing a Fly Fishing Rod

Hi and welcome to the Fishing Tackle Box.

Selecting a fly fishing rod can be a tricky endeavor. While length is a factor, the bend or action of the rod is a key factor.
Flexibility of a fly fishing rod

Fly fishing rods are often defined by their flexibility. In laymen’s terms, flexibility means how far the rods will bend when the same casting effort is used.

Minimal Bend of a fly fishing rod
A fly fishing rod that has minimum bend is often called a “fast” rod. The lack of bend lets the angler get lots of speed on the cast. This speed allows you to cast very accurately and farther away than fly fishing rod with more bends. While these benefits may sound great at first glance, a fast rod can be frustrating. There is no room for error when using the rod. If you are going to use one of these rods, you need excellent motion and timing. Generally, only anglers with a lot of experience should have a go at using fast Fly fishing rod.

Moderate Bend of a Fly fishing rod
The next step down from a fast Fly fishing rod is one with medium flexibility? These rods tend to have good flexibility, but the bend is restricted to the top half of the fly fishing rod and requires less perfection of motion and timing, but is fairly accurate. If you’have been angling for a while and have the basic techniques down, a moderately flexible fly fishing rod is worth a try.

Slinky Bend of a Fly fishing rod.
If you are just taking up fly fishing, you should use a rod with maximum flexibility. While others suggest a moderate bend is better for beginners, a “slinky bend” fly fishing rod rod gives you a lot of leeway when it comes to learning to cast.

Fly fishing is relaxing and enjoyable. Pick the wrong rod, however, and it can quickly become frustrating and stressful. If you use your brain, and not your ego, when picking a Fly fishing rod rod, you will have a blast.

And I think the next story by Rick is also worth reading.

The One That Got Away on the Green River.

Fly fishing can be a surreal experience mending the soul of any person. That is, until you have to deal with the one that got away!

The One That Got Away.

I have battled the crowds, seen the masses of fish in the crystal clear water, and been skunked by the some of the most educated trout around on the Green River below the Flaming Gorge Dam.

On a fly fishing float trip last fall, I experienced the true meaning of …The One That Got Away.

This fight and escape was like no other that I have experienced in my 10 years of fly fishing. This fish was not just big, but the most aggressive and determined trout I have ever seen!! It was a picture perfect moment;

I spot a large rising fish on the left side of the river about 50 down. We row into position. I make the perfect cast and my drift is right on target. Suddenly, the fish comes almost completely out of the water.
Now you are probably thinking, big deal, what makes this the ultimate one that got away story? It’s not the size of the fish or even the amount of time the fish was on, it’s all about the fly fishing angler.

Moments before my fly drifted over this fantastic fish, a dive-bombing Osprey snagged him out from under my nose, or more accurately, the nose of my fly!
Maybe their eyesight is not quite as good as I thought, because this bird chewed off way more than he should have!

It was a perfect snag, both talons sunk into the back of the fish. The bird was able to pull the fish almost completely out of the water with a few extremely labored flaps before he went down.

Yep, the Osprey was completely dragged under by the heavy, powerful and extremely determined fish.

Amazingly, the Osprey surfaced still clutching the fish and made another attempt to conquer the beast. Dragging the fish half submerged across 10 feet of river, the bird was once again almost completely submerged.

Again the Osprey surfaces, well, almost surfaces. Only one wing comes out of the water and flaps frantically.

One had to wonder who was having who to lunch!

Unbelievably, it started to look like the fish was going to roll the Osprey under it. Sure enough, the fish came over the top and was partially in the air while the Osprey was completely submerged under it!
The trout made a vicious twisting movement and the Osprey apparently thought oxygen was a better meal. It let go of the trout.

The soaking wet bird laboriously returned to a nearby perch for a well-deserved rest.
We all stared at each other in complete shock. Now that is one hell of a One That Got Away story!!

Making your own fishing tackle.

Hi and welcome to the fishing tackle box.

Fishing is no longer an inexpensive recreation. At least, it is not if one has to acquire every item of fishing tackle over the tackle –shop counter.

Fortunately, however, this is not necessary.Any angler who is at all handy can make quite a lot of his fishing tackle himself, at small cost perhaps at no cost at all.The extent of your fishing tackle making will depend, of course, on your aptitude for making things and the tools at your disposal, but there can be few anglers incapable of making some items of fishing tackle.

Most of the innovations in fishing tackle equipment have been pioneered by amateurs.
In fact, I believe that the fore-runner of the modern fixed- spool fishing reel was an amateur-made device constructed from “Meccano” parts!

More than one name has been immortalized in the fishing world by some device made on the kitchen table.

The development of fishing techniques and fishing tackle is a story of continuing advance from the early days of simple fixed line fishing rods to the invention of the fishing reel, and from then to the ever improving modern tackle and methods of using it

Good quality fishing tackle is as important to an angler as a well tuned instrument is to a musician: the limits to your fishing performance should be determined by your ability, not by any inadequacy of your fishing tackle.

One of the great things about fishing and making your own fishing tackle is that you never stop learning. What catches fish today seldom catches tomorrow,so to be consistently successful as an angler you must be prepared to watch, learn, and improve on your fishing tackle techniques at all times.

You will get more out of the sport if you are prepared to try different fishing tackle techniques and styles of fishing to those you already practise. Maybe you only fish a river or a sandy beach now, but as time goes by, your fishing horizon will broaden and fishing that appears to be an impossibility today may become reality in the future.

In addition, by exploring different aspects of the sport you will increase your knowledge and enjoyment of it dramatically. One of the finest ways of broadening your fishing horizons is by reading and of course using this fishing tackle box.

You will find fishing magazines, fishing tackle and fishing books, humour and a wealth of information just waiting to be tapped.
You will find them if you look under the recommend lists.
Most anglers, however, specialize in particular forms of fishing and to find a book with every major aspect of the sport within its covers is rare.

You can have the best fishing rods, reels lines and hooks in the world, but you will never catch fish unless you have good baits and and know how to use them There are books that tell you how to choose and use natural and processed fishing baits for fresh water fishing, and how to mix freshwater ground bait.

There are books on artificial fishing bait, including spinners, spoons and plugs and filled with practical advice on the use of fishing lures in fresh water and saltwater.

Fishing flies whether the natural insects or artificial patterns, are also fishing baits but because of their complexity they will be investigated separately

If you have possably come across a book or article that you feel could add to this fishing tackle box please don’t hesitate to contact me or make a comment anyway,Thanks.

Fishing techniques

Hi and welcome to the fishing tackle box.

Fishing is the activity of hunting for fish by hooking, trapping or gathering them there are many fishing techniques or methods for catching fish in this fishing tackle box.

The term can also be applied to methods for catching other aquatic animals such as molluscs(shell fish, squid, octopus) and edible marine invertebrates.

Fishing techniques included in the fishing tackle box are:

Hand gathering ,spearfishing, netting, angling and trapping and many more fun projects and ideas.Recreational, commercial and artisanal fishers use different fishing tackle techniques, and also, sometimes, the same techniques.

Recreational fishers fish for pleasure or sport, while commercial fishers fish for profit. Artisanal fishers use traditional, low-tech fishing tackle methods, for survival in third-world countries, and as a cultural heritage in other countries. Mostly, recreational fishers use angling methods and commercial fishers use netting methods.

There is an intricate link between various fishing techniques and fishing tackle and knowledge about the fish and their behaviour including migration, foraging and habitat. The effective use of fishing techniques and fishing tackle often depends on this additional knowledge

Recreational fishing, also called sport fishing, is fishing for pleasure or competition. It can be contrasted with commercial fishing, which is fishing for profit or subsistence fishing, which is fishing for survival.

The most common form of recreational fishing using fishing tackle is done with a rod, reel, line, hooks and any one of a wide range of baits Other devices, commonly referred to as terminal tackle, are also used to affect or complement the presentation of the bait to the targeted fish.

Some examples of fishing tackle or terminal tackle include weights, floats, and swivels. Lures are frequently used in place of bait. Some hobbyists make handmade fishing tackle themselves, including plastic lures and artificial flies. The practice of catching or attempting to catch fish with a hook is known as angling.

When angling, it is sometimes expected or required that the fish be caught and released.

One method of using fishing tackle box and growing in popularity is kayak fishing. Kayak fisherman fish from sea kayaks in an attempt to level the playing field with fish and to further challenge their fishing fishing tackle abilities. Kayaks are stealthy and allow anglers to reach areas not fish-able from land or by conventional boat.

Big-game fishing is fishing from boats with tackle from your fishing tackle box to catch large open-water species such as tuna, shark and marlin.

It is possible to fish and gather many sea foods with minimal equipment by using the hands. Gathering seafood by hand can be as easily as picking shell- fish or kelp up off the beach, or doing some digging for clams by hand or crabs.

Spearfishing and using fishing tackle is an ancient method of fishing conducted with an ordinary spear or a specialised variant such as a harpoon, trident, arrow or eel spear. Some fishing spears use slings (or rubber loops) to propel the spear.

Bow fishing uses a bow and arrow to kill fish in shallow water from above. There is more information about bows and arrows somewhere in the fishing tackle box

Gigging as it's known as use small trident type spears with long handles for gigging bullfrogs with a bright light at night, or for gigging suckers and other rough fish in shallow water. Gigging is popular in the American South and Midwest.

Hawaiian slings and fishing tackle have a sling separate from the spear, in the manner of an underwater bow and arrow.

Harpoons with barbed poles was widespread in palaeolithic times. Cosquer cave in Southern France contains cave art over 16,000 years old, including drawings of seals which appear to have been harpooned.

A general overview of Fishing

Fishing rods give more control of the fishing line.

The fishing rod is usually fitted with a fishing reel which functions as a mechanism for storing, retrieving and paying out the fishing line.
Floats from from your fishing tackle box may also be used, and can function as fishing bite indicators. The hook can be dressed with fishing lures or bait.

Bank fishing is usually performed with a rod and reel, although fishing nets, fishing traps, and spears can also be used.

People who fish from a fishing boat can sometimes access more areas in prime locations with greater ease than bank fishermen. However many people don’t own fishing boats and find fishing from the bank has its own advantages.
Bank fishing has its own requirements, and many things come into play for success, such as local knowledge, water depth, bank structure, location, time of day, and the type of fishing bait and lures you have in your fishing tackle box

Casting is the act of throwing the fishing line out over the water using a flexible fishing rod. The usual technique is for the angler to quickly flick the rod from behind toward the water. Casting is also a sport adjunct to fishing as; much as shooting is to hunting. The sport is supervised by the International Casting Sports Federation which sponsors tournaments and recognizes world records for accuracy and distance.

Float tubes for fishing are small doughnut-shaped fishing boats with an underwater seat in the "hole". Fishing float tubes are used for fly fishing and enable the angler to reach deeper water without splashing and disturbing still water fish.

Fly fishing and the use of artificial fishing lures from your fishing tackle box are cast with specially constructed fly fishing rods and fly lines. The fly line (today, almost always coated with plastic) is heavy enough cast in order to send the fly to the target. Artificial flies from your fishing tackle box vary dramatically in size, weight and colour.
Fly fishing is a distinct and ancient fishing method, most renowned as a method for catching trout and salmon but employed today for a wide variety of species including pike, bass, pan fish, and carp, as well as marine species, such as red fish, snook, tarpon.bone fish and striped bass. There is a growing population of anglers whose aim is to catch as many different species as possible with the fly.

Rock fishing or fishing from rocky outcrops into the sea can be a dangerous pastime and claims many lives each year.

Surf casting is fishing from a shoreline using a fishing rod to cast into the surf. With few exceptions, surf fishing is done in saltwater, often from a beach The basic idea of most surf fishermen casting is to cast a fishing bait or fishing lure as far out into the water as is necessary to reach the target fish from the shore.
This may or may not require long casting distances and muscular techniques. Basic surf fishing can be done with a surf fishing rod between seven and twelve feet long, with an extended butt section, equipped with an appropriate spinning or conventional casting reel from your fishing tackle box.

Dedicated surf fishermen usually possess an array of terminal and other fishing tackle, with rods and reels of different lengths and actions, and fishing lures and fishing baits of different weights and capabilities.

Depending on fishing conditions and the fish they are targeting, such surf fishermen tailor their fishing bait and terminal fishing tackle to rod and reel and the size and species of the fish.

Fishing reels and other equipment need to be constructed so they resist the corrosive and abrasive effects of salt and sand
