Natural fish food

|River fish live on a varied supply of natural food. They will eat practically anything that is swept down the current to them.the are three basic forms of natural food. Larger fish eat smaller fish. They also eat animals that live in the river and a multitude of creatures that live on the surrounding land but which fall into the water. Then there is a wide variety of vegetable material – Fine weed, the shoots of water plants and the seeds and fruit of riverside trees.

Not all fish eat the same natural foods nor do they feed in the same river bottom areas or at the same water height. The Barbel grubs for its food on the river bed, rooting among the stones fof grubs and worms. The trout takes insect life both in the grub stage and as fullywinged flies.

The pike, the supreme predator, eats other fish. He ambushes them from holes in the banks of the river or from thick weed beds. But the pike, along with the perch performs a useful role as a scavanger, cleaning up all the sickly and dying fish. The predatory species of fish also stabilaze the numbers of fish that are able to live in any stretch of water.

Water is life. All animals including human beings. Need an abundant supply of water both to drink and keep themselves clean. Fish of course live out their entire lives in water. So the condition of the water they must live in is of immense importance to them.

The speed of a river’s flow decides what sort of fish can live in the water. Game fish such as salmon and trout, prefer the fast water that tumbles down from the high ground through mountains and mooreland. This is the cleanest sort of water and it also contains more oxygen than slow moving rivers. Trout and salmon prefer colder water than their course fish cousins.

A river along it’s course is joined by many sidestreams. This makes the river deeper and wider and slows down it’s rate of flow. When a river has reached this stage then roach, dac, chub and barbel will live and breed in it.

Once a river has reached the flat lands it begins to twist and wind its way. This is the sort of water which we will find bream, tench and river carp.

When the river reaches the sea we find a mixture of fresh water and salt water. This part of a river is called an estuary. In estuaries we often find roach’ a few bream.eels feeding next to shoals of mullet, with flounders and the occasional bass.

In many parts of Western Europe man has created another form of waterway—the canel.Canals can be excellent fihseries for fish species that like slow-running water.Unfortunately many canels have fallen into disuse. They silt up because no boats pass through the locks.

As the number of fishermen grows’ the need for us all to maintain our rivers in good condition becomes vital. It is the duty of all anglers to keep rivers and warerways fit for fosh to live in and for people to live beside.
